How to Delegate

Welcome! I’m delighted to tell you that I and my team have been working hard for you these past couple of weeks, and very soon we will start to present our results. Let me explain.

A few weeks ago I had the privilege of travelling to the Czech Republic to train an international group of media experts. Their theme was leadership, and during the day we spent together we looked at four aspects of leadership which I consider to be of central importance for all leaders. One of these was delegation.

Several participants were honest enough to admit that they found delegation difficult, a comment many of us can resonate with. When we made a list of the pros and cons of delegation, we found that despite being aware of the many benefits of delegating, several members of the group were reluctant to delegate for a whole symphony of reasons. But more importantly, what gradually became clear during that training was that one of the reasons why there was reluctance to delegate was that some people had no idea HOW to delegate appropriately.

This set me thinking. Since that training, I and a couple of my associates have been re-reading our extensive leadership and management education resources to see just where we can actually find clear guidelines on HOW TO DELEGATE, or whether we need to create them for ourselves. And I have to say, the pickings are few so far. While most of the classic leadership texts clarify the need and justification for delegation, there is very little in the way of guidelines. So here’s what’s happening. We have started to put together some Do’s and Don’t’s and ‘How Tos’ for delegation ourselves, and will shortly start a series of articles in this blog incorporating this information. I’ll be including material from a number of trainers in these articles for you.

In the meantime, though, what about your own leadership experience? We’ll be sending out a gift valued at nearly CHF 50 to the first 10 people who get back to us with at least three guidelines, rules or How To’s which they apply to their own delegation activities. These suggestions will then also be included in the coming series of articles, accredited of course to their authors.

So, please, help us to help your fellow leaders who read this blog by sharing with us some of your own guidelines or suggestions for how to delegate. Please don’t forget to send your postal address for your free gift when you submit your text. We’ll begin our articles on this theme directly after Easter: a special Easter Bunny for leaders!
